Flight Enable Your Site

It’s easy to provide visitors to your site a fly-through map of what you have. All you have to do is create an MCF description of your site and add an embed tag wherever you want a fly-through window.

MCF is an open standard that can be used to describe meta-content, i.e., information about information. The structure of your web site is an example of meta-content. You can find more information about MCF here. However, typically, you do not need to know anything about the actual format to create an MCF description of your web site.

Fortunately, there are a number of tools available to automatically generate MCF descriptions. Some of them are listed here.

The FAQ addresses the mime-type you need to add on your web server to “Flight Enable” your site.

We have found the Standalone Application version of ProjectX to be a great tool for generating MCF. Create your hierarchy by using drag and drop and then use the Publish Subhierarchy feature to dump out an mcf description of the hierarchy you have created. The resulting file can be viewed using the plugin. We strongly urge you to read the Guide to Site Saucing or Lee Slone’s Guide if you chose this route to creating an XSpace for site.

You can also use the plugin to help you create an MCF description of your site. Instructions for using the plugin as an authoring tool are given here.

Currently, the major difference between the plugin and standalone application (from the perspective of authoring) is that the standalone application supports drag and drop, which makes it somewhat easier.

Write us when you create a new XSpace. We would like to list it here.
